Children and Pet Loss

Children can experience the loss of a pet in many different ways.  They may show sadness, anger, indifference, or cycle through all three.  Regardless of how a child reacts, it is important that the child's feelings are respected and that the child has a supportive venue to express them.   Many parents find that ceremonies or rituals, such as a burial, help children process their loss.

While many children are able to process their loss without professional help, some develop problematic symptoms or don't get better.  Pet loss support groups or individual therapy with a professional may help in these cases.
